Mesa 2x12 vs Orange 2x12
Been a while since I did a long form video, so here’s one comparing a Mesa & Orange 2x12
This isn’t so much a video showcasing MiC vs UK or 60 vs 75w V30s. More so how much of a difference cab construction, specifically open vs closed back, (and the cab making full contact with the ground) makes on the tone. Overall the Orange in the room I liked a lot, though the Mesa is my tried and true and girl, and nothing has beaten her yet.
Also yes the audio for the Orange isn’t centered, suffer

Awesome demo of this, I love mine so much. Got it with a 4x12 Marshall cab for $350 and use it in my band with another head and cab running at the same time. Reminds me of a cruder version of the JCM800.

I have three of these X2 heads, all have the metal face with the light up X2 logo. Acquiring the cabs was a big chore, but so worth it. Dime tone in a box...no extra gear needed.

Hey was just wondering, how close would you say a boosted RG100 is to the sound of the warhead x2? Do you find they sound similar with the same settings?
@@Deinosoar not similar unfortunately. If you put an Aphex 104 into the loop it’ll help get it there, but really the only amp I’d say does the Dime tone as good if not better than the X2 is the Ampeg VH-140c
Hey just wondering, how would you compare the X2 to a boosted RG100? I’ve noticed that the dime settings listed for the X2 have the treble at 7, whereas Dime has them had it at around 3 on the RG. Do you find it to be darker sounding than the RG?
@@GeetarGeneral much darker than the RG, it sounds like you have a towel over the amp unless you dime the prescence

What is your signal chain?
Warhead X2 going into a 70w V30 loaded Mesa 2x12 with a vintage MXR 6-band boosting the front, and I turn on/off the Aphex 104 (and eventually the MXR 126) in the loop. Using an ISP Decimator Pro Rack G going into both the front and the loop to quiet the amp up

@@donavonmacgillivray pop open the circuit board ontop and tweak the internal gain pots, though here they’re at stock mode which is barely to the right

Im moving to the Philippines and have one Ampeg 140C half stack very clean condition head cabinet i used with many other amps so it shows some wear . Old Roland tape echos old 1970’ Wahs also cry babies and Mutron phazers and an 83 unique Stratocaster. A damaged les paul junior maybe a 59 and some other stuff if anyone wants something let me know im now in Washington state .

I appreciate your video and the research going into it. Your playing rules. It’s too hard to tell whatit’s going on witha cell phone mic. I love my xxl. They are the best budget used heads on the market. The damper is a life saver. The weight is a back saver. The only amp in a straight high gain solid state that I’ve found subjectively more fitting for my needs is the orange super crush. If you ever need a high gain clip off the xxl I can take anybody’s di guitar and reamp it through with a Mesa cab. That way you’ll know what the studio sound would be. Ultra setting is kinda wonky. I find it better to push the lead channel. The active eq of the ultra sounds too pushed for modern tones. However it is great for 80-2010 type extreme metal genres. This can “djent”. I hate that term. It really excels in the clean and British modes. It also has an fx loop PLUS a preamp in out. Therefor I can record my entire rig sans cab and drop an ir on it in production. Rock on! Thanks for sharing your awesome amps

Why do the pedals have different settings?? If you are comparing, wouldn't it be better to have the same setting on both pedals or did I miss something?

Great texture in the highs. I have a VH-140-C equipped 200-watt head. It sounds excellent but I still think the Crate GLX lead distortion is the king of solid-state metal amps. It's a similar circuit architecture to the VH-140C but was advanced into a more evil and sinister beast in the 1990's. That was the follow up to Crate's GX series that were praised for death metal and use a distortion circuit architecture completely unrelated to the Ampeg and GLX designs. The GLX having both the shape control and the midrange EQ on the lead gives the most brutal metal tone I have ever heard. One that is such no tube amp on earth can match it including the ones I own piled around it!
